Anyone who has lost their job can tell you the paralyzing fear that one experiences. The pressure to pay the bills when their main source of income has disappeared is great. Many people either sleep to much to deal with the pressure, or they cannot sleep at all. It is the feeling of uncertainty that can surely lead someone to suicide, but it shouldn’t be. This is simply a part of life, and by following a few steps, you will be alright.
The first thing that a person should do is to file a claim for unemployment compensation. Every State is different, but many States will allow a person to file a claim by telephone or internet. For example, filing a claim in Rhode Island is as simple as going to the Dept. of Labor website (click here). Just follow the step-by-step instructions. Make sure to follow up every week by phone, because there have been so many claims it is possible they can lose your paperwork, or ignore you.
The second thing to do is to look for a job. In the past, finding a job required a person to buy a newspaper, flip to the classified section and look for a job. Now, with the age of the internet, it is much easier–and cheaper. There are many job sites out there. Sites such as, careerbuilder.com and monster.com are sites that allow employers to search for future employees by searching through posted resumes. Probably one of the best job search websites out there is indeed.com Indeed.com is a massive job search engine for jobs. Anyone who wishes to use indeed.com should go to the site, type in the job they are searching for, type in the State they are looking for a job in and click “find jobs”. The indeed search engine will search every newspaper, job site and many local resources for displayed jobs. If you find a job that you like, click it and follow the instructions to apply for the job.
The third thing to do is to create a resume. Most companies require applicants to apply for a job online, and many of those companies require a resume to be uploaded. Some people think creating a resume is difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. There are many resources available on the internet. One such source is “The OWL at Purdue” The OWL has many resources, not just limited to resume writing.
Just to recap, you filed a claim, searched for a job, made a resume, now you need to make some money.
One of the easiest ways to make money is to sell some of your goods using craigslist.org There are so many categories of things to sell. People can sell Cars, furniture, auto parts, clothing, musical instruments, just to name a few. Now is the time to make the difficult choice to decide what to sell in your house. Let’s face it, many people are packrats. Believe it or not, there are many things in your house or garage that are worth money to someone else. Grab a digital camera, take good detailed pictures of the thing you are wishing to sell and post it on craigslist. Just make sure that when posting to the site that you select the communtiy that you are in. For example, if you live in Rhode island make sure you post your item on Rhode Island craigslist, not San Francisco craigslist. San Francisco is the default setting for the site.
After posting the item on the site you should receive an email from an interested potential buyer. Make sure to respond quickly to any questions the person has. If the person expresses interest arrange a meeting at a public spot. Never arrange a meeting at your house! Speaking from personal experience, selling on craigslist is fun. It allows a person to make money while watching television. Some of the popular items are books, furniture and cars. Cars, if priced right, will sell quickly.
Let’s face it, change is difficult to deal with. But, it doesn’t have to be the be all-end all of a person. When life gives you lemons go out and make some lemonade
